Monsoon Villanelle

For long, Chennai yearned for the monsoon of their dreams,
Looming summers devoid of water was never far from thought,
Wondering if  rain gods heard the denizens' silent screams.

Elsewhere while water filled lakes, rivers, rivulets and streams,
The city remained, at best, known for its winters that were hot,
For long, Chennai yearned for the monsoon of their dreams.

Wondering if  rain gods heard the denizens' silent screams,
A speaker's parched throat faring better than the city's drought,
The situation discussed threadbare on multiple reams.

For long, Chennai yearned for the monsoon of their dreams,
In response, the clouds burst and look what they brought,
Rivers, lakes and catchments bursting at their seams.

Wondering if  rain gods heard the denizens' silent screams
Ceased, evident from what the prayers had wrought,
It was no longer funny, out of bounds for internet memes.

For long, Chennai yearned for the monsoon of their dreams,
Wondering if  rain gods heard the denizens' silent screams,
The general populace hit hard, displaced and distraught,
Knowing not that their playing with nature has its perils fraught.
